직접 만들까? 싼 것을 살까? 사서 고칠까?

Amazon에서
“KT88 Single ended Tube amp” 라고 찾아보면 여러 개 나온다.
추천하는 진공관은 …
2A3, 300B, KT88, EL34, 6L6를 KT88 대신에 넣으면 해당 amp가 나옴.
(비싼 순서. 있는 것도, 없는 것도 있음)
물론 eBay도 마찬가지.
Total Cost가 싼 것을 선택하면 된다.

그중 두 개 예를 들면… (Amazon에서)
eBay에서 Antique amp (쉽게 말해 명품, 고물)을 사서 고칠 수도 있는데 권하고 싶지않다.
경매의 특성상 명품이라고 자기들끼리 가격을 과도하게 올린다.
거의 새로 만들다시피 해야 하는 것도 많고.

Amp의 제작이 목적이 아니라 음악을 듣는 것이 중요 목적인 사람은
만드는 것이나 사는 것이나 값이 비슷하다면 만들려고 위험을 감수할 필요가 없다.
요즘 중국에서 조립해서 Amazon, eBay에서 파는 Tube Amp가 많은데
그 값이 내가 부품을 사 모아서 조립하는 것 보다 싼 경우가 많다.
KT88, EL34 Amp의 경우가 그렇다.
2A3, 300B Amp는 더 고급이라서 그런지 부품 값 보다 비싸다.
그리고 요즘 대부분의 전자회로 부품은 중국에서 생산되니 부품의 품질은 그게 그거다.
단…
Power Trans.
Output Trans.
Coupling Capacitor.
Filter Choke.
FIlter Capacitor.
이것은 음질에 영향을 미치는 것인데 싼 중국제를 썼다고 보면 된다.
이것들은 Amp를 들어 보면서 바꾸어 주는 것이 좋다.

(1) 번 amp에는 Output Trans를 일본제를(Japan Z11) 썼다고 자랑스럽게 썼다.
이렇게 하면.

장점.
내가 만든 것보다 외관이 아름답다.
만들려고 연장 안 사도 된다. (최소한도만 산다)
만들려고 고생 안해도 된다.

주의점.
(1) Power Trans의 전압이 집 전압과 같아야 한다.
미국은 120V
그 외의 나라는 220, 240V인데
220V, 240V용으로 만들어 있으면 좋은데 여기 소개한 두 개 모두 110V 용 인 것 같다.
110V 용을 120V에 연결해서 사용하는 것은 참을 만하다.
filament에 걸려야할 6.3V의 전압이 7 Volt로 높아질 뿐이다.
진공관이 아주 조금 빨리 닳아 없어지는 것 뿐이다.

그런데 220V를 쓰는 분 (한국)은 판매상에게 문의해야한다.
220V 용이 있느냐고. (값이 좀 비싸질 것이다)
아니면 220-110 Stepdown Transformar를 사서 써야한다.
Trans의 용량은 최소 500W

(2) Output Trans는 거의 확실히 품질이 떨어진다고 본다.
eBay에서 SE Outout Transformer를 찾아보면 1 Pair에 $200 – $1000이 넘는다.
이 Amp를 사서 좀 듣다가 싫어지면 고급 Output Transformer로 바꾼다.
나라 별로 구할 수 있는 것이 다르겠지만.
미국에서는 One Electron의 UBT(Pair에 $210 +)나 Hammond 의 SE Output Trans를 쓴다.
Output Trans. 배치할 공간 부족할 가능성이 있다. 보기 흉해도 넣을 수는 있을 것이다.

(3) Coupling Capacitor.
이것도 음질에 영향을 미친다. (아주 심하지는 않다)
좀 듣다가 싫어지면 고급으로 바꾼다.
값은 많이 비싸지 않다 (pair에 $40-$80)

(4) Filter Choke …
경우에 따라 (이게 없는 수가 많다) 추가
사진을 보면 아마도 두 Amp 모두 Filter Choke가 없을 것 같은데
아마도 추가 장착은 내부의 공간이 없으면 거의 어려울 것 같다
추측이다 사봐야 안다.

(5) FIlter Capacitor… 경우에 따라 교체
물론 이렇게 하려면
Tube Amp에 대한 상식이 필요하다.
최종 비용은 내가 직접 만드는 비용 보다 좀 비싸질 것이다.
외관은 내가 만드는 것보다 멋이 있을 것이고.
자세히 보면 약하고 싸구려로 보일 가능성이 있다. (당연)
