옛날에 즐겨 들었던 Simon & Garfunkel 이 부른 유명한 노래.
노래가 참 좋아서 그 뜻을 해석하려고 했다.
Parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme
이 부분을 도저히 해석을 할 수가 없었다.
도대체 이게 무슨 뜻일까?
수수께기였다.
1999년, 미국에 와서 grocery market에 갔다.
농산물(Procuce) Corner 에는 …
Parsley도, sage도, rosemary도, thyme도 있었다.
야채 중에 향신료 양념으로…
양념이라곤 파, 마늘, 고추, 생강 밖에 모르던 내가
“Parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme“을 해석할 수가 없었던 것이다.
그건 해석하지 말고 그냥
“Parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme“ 라고 해야 해석이 된다.
그래서 그 의미를 깨달았다.
아 !
Scarborough 장터,
야채 파는 가게의
야채(양념) 파는 여인을
사랑했구나.

이렇게 해석이 되는 거지요.
“이것이 문화와 관습의 차이로구나“ 하는 것을 알았다.
같은 시대를 살지만 동양 한국과 서양 유럽의 차이.
나의 글
청산별곡을 보면 지금으로부터 600-1000년 전의
우리나라 고려시대 가요인데 청산별곡, 이해하기 어렵다.
시대 상황, 관습, 문화를 잘 모르기 때문이다.
같은 우리나라인데도…
성경은 최소한 2000 년 이전,
신약은 대략 2000년, 구약은 그보다 훨씬 오랜 3500년 전 정도.
동양도 서양도 아닌 중동 메소포타미아 지역의
역사적 문화적 사회 관습적인 배경에서 기록된 글이다.
그 때, 그곳에 살던, 그 사람들에게 의미를 전달할 수 있도록 씌어졌다.
시간적으로 2000년 이상, 공간적으로 지구의 반대편에
떨어져있는 이 시대 사람들에게 거의 동일한 의미로
전달된다는 것은 매우 경이로운 일이라고 생각한다.
성경을 읽다보면 역사, 문화, 관습의 차이에서 오는
오늘의 내가 이해하기 어려운 부분이 있는 것은 당연한 일이다.
그런데도 우리는 성경을 대부분 잘 이해한다.
그것은 성경을 먼저 연구한 분들이 당시의 역사, 문화, 관습을 설명해 주었고
역사를 배경으로 한 영화 소설 등을 통해 직 간접적으로 당시의 상황을 이해했기 때문이다.
그래도 이해 못할 곳이 꽤 있고
설교자들이 소설을 쓰듯이 맞지 않는 정보를 전달하는 경우도 있다.
예수님의 “낙타와 바늘귀“의 예화에서
바늘귀가 작은 성문이라느니 낙타가 아니라 밧줄이라느니 하는 말은
모두 다 거짓으로 거짓된 추측성의 역사, 문화, 관습상의 해석이라고 생각한다.
그래도 평신도들은 전문가(성경학자, 목사)들의 견해를 의지할 수밖에 없다.
단, 성경을 잘 읽어서 진위의 여부를 분별해야 한다고 생각한다.
성경의 문맥이 우선이다.
